My cousin, Cary Begraft, got married to Lyn Thiessen Gebhard today in Long Branch, New Jersey. They also found out today that the child they are expecting is a boy. Congratulations to them on both the marriage and the pregnancy!
I thought in honor of his wedding day, I would post our grandparent’s marriage certificate. Cary’s mom, Lena, and my mom, Martha, are the daughters of Albert Westra and Etta Pauw.
Albert and Etta were married on 03 June 1928 in Little Falls, New Jersey at 7:40 p.m. Albert had only been in American a touch over a year when he was married. He had arrived in New York City on his 19th birthday 13 March 1927. According to the certificate, Albert was born in Dronjirp, Netherlands, and was 26 years old. Etta had only been in America three short months. She had arrived in New York City on 04 March 1928. Etta was born in Ochtelbur, Germany, and was 25 years old at the time they got married. My grandfather’s occupation was carpenter. Their witnesses were Herman Westra (Albert’s brother) and his wife.
Albert’s parents are Johann Westra and Magdelena Terpstra. Etta’s parents are Ewold Pauw and Martha Jurgens. Once they came over to America, my grandparents very quickly started their family. They had two sons, John and Ewold, and two daughters, Martha and Lena. Hmmm….I wonder where those names came from?
Neither Albert nor Etta were married before they were united in holy matrimony on this day in early June. After living in Little Falls for a few years, they settled down in Sussex County, New Jersey. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Newton, New Jersey, on 03 June 1978.
In total, they would be married for 67 years before my grandfather passed away on 20 March 1995. Here’s to Cary and Lyn having a marriage as long and lasting as Albert and Etta Westra!
